Minori, Rheginna Minor

Minori and the Amalfi Coast 6

A Beloved Retreat

Since Ancient Times

Minori, called Rheginna Minor by the Romans who chose it as favorite resort and retreat, is among the most famous and charming destinations in the Amalfi Coast. Its position in the center of the Costiera allows to move easily along several itineraries to go discovering its endless artistic, naturalistic and historical beauties, among which Amalfi, Atrani, Positano, Ravello, Maiori and Vietri sul Mare.

Taste

The Amalfi Coast is extraordinary from a landscape and artistic point of view as well as for its food, with delicacies and local dishes that are absolutely delicious. The most traditional specialties take inspiration from the flavors of the sea, starting with the famous Scialatielli allo scoglio or served with fresh clams, flying squids and potatoes typical of Furore, Colatura di Alici from Cetara, without neglecting ‘Ndunderi, with ricotta and eggs, cheese from the backcountry, sweets, wines and liquors, first of all Limoncello.

An extraordinary occasion to appreciate the cuisine of the Amalfi Coast is the culture and cooking event “Gusta Minori”: scheduled every September, for one week, this event takes place in the alleys of Minori and pays a homage to ancient tastes and recover the “cooking deposits " of its territory.

Nature

Visiting the Amalfi Coast offers the extraordinary occasion of venturing along paths and trails in the greenery in a wild, pristine nature, with breathtaking views on the sea.

There are several trekking trails winding along the coast, easy and more challenging, starting from the Sentiero degli Dei (“Path of the Gods”): the path links Agerola and Positano providing an easy path and a more demanding one. The path unwinds among woods and sources from the little Church of Madonna della Libera in Maiori to the Santuario dell’Avvocata, a hermitage from where you’ll enjoy a spectacular view on the sea.

Another fascinating nature trail is that of the Valle delle Ferriere, between Amalfi and Scala till the Valle dei Mulini, renown for paper manufacturing, Sentiero della Praia, from Bomerano to Marina di Praia, the trail from Termini to Punta Campanella, or, for trekkers in good shape, the trail till the amazing Bay of Ieranto.

Traditions

Minori and the Amalfi Coast are very rich in churches and sacred places. The main religious site in Minori is the Basilica di Santa Trofimena, that cherishes the relics of saint Trofimena, in honor of which celebrations and processions take place on 13 July and 5 November.

A very meaningful period to attend religious celebrations is the Holy Week, when Via Crucis and dramatizations are held in Minori and anywhere along the coast. Especially touching are the Processions of the Battenti, who, hooded and dressed in white parade through the streets of the village with Christ on the cross.

Other highly significant sacred places along the coast are the Duomo di San’Andrea in Amalfi, the Duomo di Ravello, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Teresa dell’Assunta in Positano, the Duomo di San Giovanni Battista in Vietri sul Mare, the Santuario della Madonna dell'Avvocata, still much revered today, above Maiori, and the Santuario dei Santi Cosma e Damiano in Ravello.

Testimonies of the Roman age are kept also at the Museo Archeologico Romano di Santa Maria Assunta, in Positano, built inside a “villa d’ozio” dating back to the I sec. AD. refurbished and open to the public only in 2018.

In the Amalfi Civic Museum it is instead possible to trace the story of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, while the Coastal Tower in Conca dei Marini houses today the Museum of the sea and of marina art.
