A dive into tradition

Minori and the Amalfi Coast 5

to discover

the region

With its colorful lanes and ancient fishing village Minori is among the most charming places in the Amalfi Coast, enlisted in the Unesco World Heritage sites since 1997.

The Amalfi Coast is an extraordinary setting of evocative places squeezed between the greenery of the mountains and the blue of the sea, an immense treasure of artistic beauties and historical testimonies, a wealth of tastes and perfumes that are fit to be explored any time of the year.

Taste

Travelling to the Amalfi Coast cannot exclude a food and wine tour through traditional recipes and authentic savors discovering the most delicious specialties of this extraordinary territory.

Those who love fish cannot miss anchovies from Cetara to enjoy with the traditional spaghetti alla colatura di alici. Shrimps, rockfish, greater amberjack, octopus and shellfish are the main ingredients of Scialatielli allo scoglio. Those who love first courses will appreciate the pasta from Gragnano, the most typical food tradition of Salerno, and Ndunderi of Minori, kneaded with very fresh ricotta.

Not to miss also the cheese of the Lattari Mountains, with the Ricotta from Tramonti, Provolone del Monaco and fiordilatte, local lemons like the typical Sfusato Costa di Amalfi, main ingredient for the production of limoncello, and the wide array of desserts, from pastiera to torta caprese, from the Amalfi cookies to delizia al limone.

Nature

The Amalfi Coast is a treasure chest of beaches and small villages, but is also nature, with many itineraries to go along old mule tracks and trails perched over the sea, among lemon and vegetable orchards torn away from the mountains. The Sentiero dei Limoni (Path of the Lemons), an old road connecting Minori and Maiori, among terracing of Sfusato, are wonderful.

It's worth taking with you your trekking shoes to go along the easy trail that from Termini leads to Punta Campanella (2 hours, 4 km), extreme offshoot of the Coast, or the Sentiero degli Dei, that in about three hours takes from Agerola to Positano; or visiting the Torre dello Ziro (2/3 hours, 4 km), or the Vallone delle Ferriere (3 hours, 6 km) among streams, fern woods and water mills.

Those of you who are fit can go discovering the Bay of Ieranto (4 hours, 6 km), walking along dry stone walls and brooms till the small pebble beach right in front of the Faraglioni di Capri or go along the paths traveled by pilgrims to get to the Santuario della Madonna dell'Avvocata, a Medieval refuge overlooking the Gulf of Salerno (6/7 hours, 16 km).

Traditions

Visiting the Amalfi Coast means immersing in a heritage extraordinary for beauty and cultural richness, where religious traditions are still strong and where are many places of faith to visit.

A tour through the churches of the Coast cannot but start from the Amalfi Cathedral, of the IX century, with its famous staircase and the crypt with the saint’s relics, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Teresa dell’Assunta, a small jewel in the heart of Positano with its Black Madonna of the byzantine age, the Duomo di San Giovanni Battista, in Vietri sul Mare, with its characteristic dome in green and yellow majolica, the Duomo di Ravello, with the relics of the patron, Saint Pantaleon, and the Abbazia di Santa Maria de’ Olearia, among the most important Benedictine monastic buildings, which is a precious testimony of the art dating back to the early Middle Ages.

Among the religious traditions of the Coast particularly evocative is the Procession of Saint Peter, in Cetara on the 29 June, or the celebrations for the Holy Week, with the touching Processions of Battenti in Minori and Good Friday in Amalfi.
